Phespirit goes to Bali
Sanur September 2004
SOUTHERN BEACH
This ten-storey highrise is the tower wing of the Grand Bali Beach hotel in Sanur.
Built in 1965, it was the first modern tourist hotel in Bali. The local elders took one look at the completed eyesore and decreed that never again should a hotel be built to stand higher than a coconut palm.
EASTERN BEACH
Heading north around the coast from Sanur the golden beaches give way to dark brown volcanic sands.
The coast at Kusumba close to the temple of Goa Lawah is put to use for salt-making. Sand is saturated with seawater and left to dry, after which the salt is washed out and extracted by evaporation. Clever.
NORTHERN BEACH
The same dark volcanic sand can be found along the northern coast at Lovina Beach.
Not so pretty when the tide is out.
