Phespirit goes to Armenia
Yerevan     May 2008

HOLY MOUNTAIN

Away across Yerevan, obfuscated by haze, cushioning billows of cloud, majestic above a foreign horizon ..... is Mount Ararat.

This legendary sacred icon of Armenia is a permanent reminder of ancient folklore, lost western lands, and the beauty of nature.

SPIRITUAL LEADER

Better late than never, the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church tardily wanders a couple of hundred metres from his palace to catch the end of mass at Echmiadzin.

He has a tiny glinting cross on his forehead to mark him out from all the hangers-on.

PAGAN TEMPLE

No matter that Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion - it is this resurrected 1st century pre-Christian temple at Garni that is depicted most often in tourist literature.

The image of its front is ubiquitous, so here is the view from the back.
