Phespirit goes to Armenia
Yerevan May 2008
VALLEY MONASTERY
For a pilgrimage to be meritous it has to be hard. Geghard monastery sits at the end of a long valley - an arduous march in ancient times ..... but less than an hour's drive from Yerevan nowadays.
These people drove. Phespirit was driven.
ROCK MONASTERY
Geghard monastery takes two forms: a first that is built, and a second that is hewn.
Here Phespirit gets beneath the surface, at the dim interior of an extraordinary rock-cut church. It is one of Earth's special places.
LAKE MONASTERY
This charming building is Astvatsatsin - the second of two churches on the Sevanavank peninsula in northwest Lake Sevan.
Phespirit suggests visitors take some U.K. one-pound coins. They would be very much appreciated by the numismatist within.
