FORTALEZA DO PICO

Forte de São João Baptista (also known as Fortaleza do Pico) was designed to protect Funchal from pirates at the beginning of the 17th century.

Now it is occupied by the Portuguese navy, and also by tourists, taking photos like this across the rooftops of the city.

BENCH OF WOE

In a garden city, São Francisco Gardens is relatively small and quite unremarkable, yet handily located at the centre of Funchal.

Observe, the bench, on which Phespirit left his camera, never to see it again.

Most regrettable.

STRAIGHT AND NARROW

West to east, Funchal has its tourist town, its city centre, and its old town.

This is Rua de Santa Maria, which crosses through the old town parallel to the coast.
